Commentary ~ November 20, 2003:
George Soros knows the perils of Nazism, Stalinism and Fascism.
And he sees all three in the White House.
But unlike most poor saps who sit frustrated in their corners,
Soros - one of the world's richest men -- is putting his money where
his mouth is.
Soros has given away nearly $5 billion to promote democracy in
the former Soviet bloc, Africa and Asia. He is now donating funds
to promote democracy in one of the most recent countries to succumb
to a brutal dictatorship: the United States of America.
With his recent $5 million contribution to MoveOn.org, an activist
group, he has now given a total of $15.5 million of his personal
wealth to oust Bush. he has reportedly pledged to raise $75 million
to help Democrats defeat President Bush in next year's election.
"America, under Bush, is a danger to the world," Soros
told The Washington Post. "And I'm willing to put
my money where my mouth is."
Soros believes said in the interview with the Post that a "supremacist
ideology" guides this White House. He said it reminds him of
his childhood in occupied Hungary:"When I hear Bush say, 'You're
either with us or against us,' it reminds me of the Germans."
It conjures up memories, he said, of Nazi slogans on the walls,Der
Feind Hort mit ("The enemy is listening"). "My experiences
under Nazi and Soviet rule have sensitized me."
Bush's blind supporters are, of course, in a tissy. The mere idea
of a successful capitalist putting his money against a Republican
is difficult for them to swallow. What they don't realize is that
Bush is against free-market capitalism, against democracy and against
freedom -- all the elements that Soros is seeking to defend.
